the bums

yeah yeah it's been almost a week since my last post, and i know you've all been waiting with baited breath to see how i am doing and what i decided about the race. i know you just live to read my blog and hear about my life, because it's so stinking exciting. so, sorry for my absence.

about el marathono (that's spanish for marathon didn't you know?) i've decided not to do a full. every training program i found was between 16-20 weeks and since i haven't been running consistently i didn't feel like i'd be adequately ready in 12 weeks. a lot of people seem to think i'm like this pro runner, well news flash, i'm not. if i was then i'd be sponsored by nike and only wear nike clothes and be totally legit. and i'd probably be black (not racist, just all the best runners seem to be black). so i'm doing a half marathon, maybe two, before i leave for the mish.
sometimes how i feel when i watch Biggest Loser
in reference to the title of this post, no this isn't a post about bums. although that could be quite entertaining. get your mind outta the gutter! ok. moving on. see i done got sick. it all started after sushi last thursday. a titch of the sore throat. i didn't think much of it. but by the time i got home from work friday i knew i was coming down with something nast. but did that stop me from staying up until 2 am? nope. it was totes worth it too by the way. anyways i've been sick. and that my friends, is the bums. i literally do nothing but sleep, study, go to work, and um yes, sleep.
last night the nurse at work gave me some tylenol pm and, friends, if i was gonna go be a druggie i think that would be my drug of choice. is this legal stuff to write? stuff knocked me right out and i slept until 9 am. beautiful beautiful. i did kinda have a tylenol pm hangover. i went to buy some so i didn't have to keep getting the nurse at work to give it to me (because that just sounds too much like a drug dealer right?) but they don't sell the stuff at Smith's. what the bum? i was pretty upset. now please don't go thinking i'm gonna be all addicted to over the counter drugs (although i did have to show my id when i bought my knock-off nyquil), i just found my experience with tylenol pm worth noting.

and this is what i'm like when i'm sick. if you thought i took a lot of naps before i was sick, well now i don't even set my alarm to wake up from my nap! heck, i gotta get better! i've got tests to take, friends to hang out with, and adventures to have!  and of course my body chooses the warmest week of the year thus far to get sick. it's perfect running weather and i'm in here chugging water and sniffling away. boo.

now just because i'm sure you are fascinated by my storied of phlegm and cold medications, i'm going throw this picture down because i desperately need to watch Harry Potter again, i want to go thrift shopping every time i hear this song, and because i died laughing when i saw this.

be nice. remember this was written by a sick girl :)

marathon thoughts

i know i said that i'm running a full marathon before i leave on the mish, but now i'm having mega second thoughts.
- there are 12 weeks until the UV marathon (june 8) and all the training plans i've looked at are at least 16 weeks long. i don't want to be under prepared. if i'm gonna run a marathon i want to run it right, that means training well.
- i'm scared. there i said it. i'm scared that i won't do well. my few runs i've been on in the warmer weather haven't been amazing. and i'm scared that i will hate the entire race. my friend who ran a marathon two years ago said it was the worst thing ever. i'm comfortable with half marathons.
- i'm lazy. let's be real. lots of days i'd rather take a nap than go running. i live a reeeeal exciting life.

- i don't have lots of time. as i work more i won't have time to put in the hours for a long run. because i'm not the fastest runner, when i get to the really long runs i will need 2-4 hours. of course it will be warmer so i could get up early in the am and go running (but why would i do that when i love sleep so much?) and since i work most saturday afternoons and evenings i won't have time to do the long runs then either.

maybe i'm just rationalizing away reasons for doing a full marathon. i could always do a full marathon when i get home from my mission. it would be a good goal to do once i get back.
or maybe i just need some mega motivation. like a runny buddy. new running shoes. a promise of a road trip. or ryan goslig + puppy. just sayin.....

anyways i could use some advice, motivation, etc. to help me decide what to do. i have to sign up for the marathon by march 10 if i'm going to do it. help a girl out will ya?

peace and blessings.

a slice of reality pie

this is not the kind of pie you eat at Thanksgiving. although my Thanksgiving Break didn't involve anything hugely monumental, it was a terrific break from school. this morning i woke up and reality hit me hard- like a bad hangover. (note: i don't know what a hangover feels like, but i had a horrible migraine and i figure a hangover can't be much worse.)

our toilet was clogged and overflowing. when i woke up i found that my roommates had used every paper towel in the house to clean up the water (next time let's use a mop or rags ok?) and our manager was in DC, unable to assist us as our bathroom flooded with sewer water. yum. we don't have a plunger so i borrowed one from my brother and tried to fix the toilet. nope it didn't work. it stopped overflowing, but the water is like a centimeter below the top of the toilet. . .  thank goodness for will smith! he came over and fixed the toilet! i guess it just needed a man's plunging!

i have a huge pathophysiology test this week. i didn't study nearly enough over the break. granted, spending time with family and helping my parents is 100% more important, but that doesn't mean i'm not stressed. i have a test next week too. who has tests the week before finals? oh yes, my professors. it's so great. (not.) can i just live in the library for the next three weeks until finals are over?

this week is the Festival of Trees. i haven't missed it in the last three years. and i can't go this year. so bummed about that. any kind soul want to take me?

but on the bright side, here is a quick recap of Thanksgiving break. . .
at the women's volleyball game. there's a sock in my hair. don't worry about it.

we made seven pies! my favorite- pecan pie

ran my fourth half marathon. . .

with these two Africa girls! it was freeeeeezing!

i also:
worked almost 20 hours
started reading Harry Potter again
sang Christmas songs
watched a BYU basketball game
put up Christmas decorations

28 October 2012

beka did what?!

on saturday in a craze- induced by homemade oreos and too much sleep- i signed up for a half marathon . . . that's on THANKSGIVING.

i know that i give the illusion that i'm this buff, hardcore, legit runner. but secretly i've been really bad at working out slash running this semester. so this half marathon may or may not be the death of me. despite my trepidation and underpreparedness i am excited! i'm going to be running it with two africa besties- Abby and Kaylen! they are both way more legit than i am but it's ok. i just run for the fun of it! you can bet that these next three weeks i'll be spending much more time running and working out. i'm excited to work towards this goal! it's going to be a great way to keep my motivation up as the weather gets colder. i hope that it goes through to the Christmas season too.

in other news: my friend Sam came down for the weekend. Sam has been living in NYC for the past year and a half. now if that's not living the dream, i don't know what is! anyways she is going on a mission in 17 days and so it was only mandatory that she come down and see me before she left. it was a blast! we got soup at Zupas, watched John Tucker Must Die, and went to a Spudnut party with some old friends. **spudnut: a delicious homemade doughnut made with potatoes.
typical of our relationship

ps. any good tips on styling my short hair? i'm at a loss people.

thought on tuesday

one of the downsides of working at a desk is that my left hand stays fairly warm (because i can sit on it. tmi? maybe) while my right hand freezes. it's kind of a cruel irony.

i realized the other day that although i made a goal to run a marathon in September, i'm totally scared to even try. i just don't think i can do it. the thought of running farther than 13 miles is frightening. i guess i should remember that when i first started running i could barely run a mile, and then i did a half marathon. i guess i can do anything i put my mind to... right? but, any suggestions on how to stay motivated? how do do those long runs? how to deal with knee pain? or if you want to be my running buddy (i run about a 10 min/mile pace) let me know!

i'm at work for 9 hours today. in the same 25 square feet. it's quite exciting. not. but at least there were snickerdoodles in the break room. (i didn't even eat one, but knowing that they were there and they were free was a comforting thought.)

in my lunch today i had a chocolate chip cookie with coconut in it. ummmm ok, why has no one ever thought of this before?! it is crazy good. i want to go buy me some coconut right now and make some so ya'll can try it out.

i've been working out for about an hour every day and i'm going to start running every other day. it's fantastic. i just want to find a way to amp up my work out. ideas?

in between going to three sacrament meetings on sunday (i better get really blessed for that), i discovered a few things. i was sincerely pondering and praying about something i really want. something that i, in fact, require in order to reach the Celestial Kingdom. it is a good thing to want. but because i went to three sacrament meetings i heard a great talk by my friend Casey. he said that we should be asking God how we can be an instrument in His hands. i think i make the mistake of asking, asking, asking. but i'm not asking the right questions. so i guess i gotta work for that. the Lord wants me to turn my life totally over to Him. it's probably going to be hard because i'm not patient and i like to do things my own way, but, even more, i want to help His children, and being His instrument is the only way i know how.

speaking of church, i'm giving a talk on sunday. it's only been two years. the topic? "why is memorial day significant to us as Latter-Day Saints?" let's just talk about how my family always "celebrates" memorial day by planting our garden and weeding the entire yard. the only thing we are remembering is how much we hate weeding and how we did this last year, so why are we doing it again this year. obviously i'm off to a great start.

i feel like everyone sees me through rose colored glasses. to them i'm: super athletic, a good writer, smart, a good listener, supportive, an example of righteousness, etc. but honestly i don't feel like i'm any of this. i see myself as a pretty mediocre individual who is constantly attempting to catch up to everyone else. i feel like i'm being left in the dust. so who's right? my inner self, or the people i live with and associate with day to day?

ok we are getting too deep and i don't really feel like being all philosophical and psychological and emotional today. even though i have two loooong hours left at work. i've given you enough to go on. have a great tuesday!

ps. it's National Hamburger Month! who wants to celebrate with me?? i'm thinking either In 'N Out or JCW's!

13 February 2012

i'd run a mile for ya

it's time i made a confession. i have a crush. it's major. and who is it on?

Miles Batty.

if you go to byu then i think it's a sin if you do not know who he is.
i cut his picture out of newspapers, get butterflies if i see him walk by me in the RB or SFH, follow all his races. and kids, this is a two fold crush. i have a crush on his athleticism. he is an amazing runner! in fact, this last weekend, he broke the NCAA mile record at the 105th Milrose games. you can watch him breaking the record and it's pretty fantastic.
that is some stellar running! he is running with some top professionals here and breaks the record, making the new record 3:54.56 (or something close to that). the second fold to this crush is that this boy is insanely cute.

i'm kind of a freaky stalker, i know, but hey he might be famous someday...

a healthy me

i'm not a junk food junkie. i eat pretty healthy. i work out. i consider myself a fairly healthy person. but since i am an exercise science major, the topic of health, exercise, and nutrition is pretty much in my daily conversations. i have also been less than satisfied with my eating, running and workout habits as of late. [this is what happens when you work fast food, your lifting buddy moves to NYC, and your running buddy gets a boyfriend.] so, i have decided to make a goal following this plan.

starting november1st (because i have to have my halloween fun) i will be doing this. lucky for me it will be over just before Thanksgiving. I am hoping that if i get in the habit of eating really healthy then i will continue to do so into the horrendous holiday season.

in addition to my goal, i am making a "Healthy 365" page which will feature tips, my goals, etc. on how to stay healthy and fit. i hope you check it out! and enjoy!

pounding the ivories

so, i've been a little stressed.

some days i feel like i can't escape it.

since i have absolutely no money, i can't run away to NY.
what are my two "escapes"?

piano.
or music :)
running.

they say when it rains, it pours. i'd like it to pour good rain right about now. isn't it my turn now?

24 April 2011

we are runners

sorry i was MIA for a few days. finals week took it's toll on my brain and just didn't have time to blog about my life. slowly and surely i will tell  you about finals week. hopefully i'll get caught up soon!

on Saturday April 16th (also the first day of finals) I ran my third half marathon! and i was lucky enough to get to run it with my amazing Grandpa. He is 76 and still running! i want to be like that when i'm old too.

the race started off pretty cold. i was a little worried because i'd been sick all week and the cold wasn't going to help. but once i started running everything was just awesome! after about mile 3 you are getting in the groove and by mile 5 you are stellar. i finished at 2:05 which isn't faster than my previous race, but at least it isn't slower! i feel pretty good about the time considering i'd been sick and hadn't trained much during the semester. here are some pictures my dad took after the race!
just after finishing, can you tell? i'm so red!

Me and Grandpa! He finished around 3 hours

Grandpa and me again.
racing is such an adrenaline rush! i'm super sad i'll be in Africa the entire summer and miss all the awesome races that i could have done. but i already have plans for at least 2 races when i get back and more to come in 2012!

weekend update: crazy cravings and fighting cancer

remember how i decided to go off sugar for the month of March? yeahhh.  i was doing so great at it and then Friday night i got these cravings for something sweet. i decided that i could eat treats on weekends and on dates [because that is rude to turn down stuff like that on a date ya know].  so i went to Brick Oven with friends on Friday and got a delicious cookie monster. I didn't feel guilty either. BAD. after splurging a little this weekend on treats (ok not like a ton) I've taken back my decision to have treats on the weekend. I can have treats on dates and I will not be going to the end of March because we are celebrating Adam and Sarah's birthday's on the 27th. deal?
this is about what the cookie monster looked like

on another note, i did do something really cool and health related this weekend! every year BYU Cancer Research Society holds the Rex Lee Run. All the proceeds go to research to find a cure for cancer. I got extra credit in physiology for doing the run, but I was planning on doing it anyway. Over the past few years it has become more and more clear to me how prevalent cancer is in our society and how it affects young and old. I was proud to run in honor of those who I know have fought cancer. It was also exciting because I PR'ed! I was hoping to do so and I was thrilled when I crossed the finish line!
i didn't take pictures at the race but my friend Emma did so
i'll get them on here soon. this is the t shirt and bib!

every weekend i think i'm going to have tons of time to sit around, take a nap, and watch Gilmore Girls. and every weekend, i am dead wrong. but, it's ok. this weekend had a mixture of good and bad. [the bad was mostly the BYU vs. SDSU tournament game. i don't wanna talk about it.] good things included:

an epic winning game against UNM
lunch with one of my most favorite cousins
hanging out with Andrew, Nate, and Tessa Friday night
seeing Letters to Juliet (i actually truly loved this chick flick)
Rex Lee Run
Costa Viiiiida (i may or may not be addicted)
Spoon it Up
seeing Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs for the bajillionth time
laughing with Sam
baguette with nutella and laughing cow cheese
making new friends
cooking a home made meal
talking with Shalise
this is from Shalise's birthday breakfast, but i just want to say how
awesome she is and it is amazing how alike we think!
i'm going to miss her while she is gone!

Monday's are such blah days especially when your roommate doesn't have school and gets to do fun things all day. how lame is that? oh well, i'll get over it.

20 December 2010

this is the worldly side of me steppin in for a quick chat...

Christmas 2010
I guess we can say that this is a "realistic" Christmas list. What I really want.... well I don't think even Santa is that magical. Some of these are unrealistic (like the harem pants or that blazer- they were very expensive). But, hey, I figured, that if I'm dreaming, I might as well dream big. I feel like this expresses me very well. Sporty- gear for swimming, running and rugby. Fashion- bomber jacket, cardigans, harem pants, blazer, skinny pants, Toms and boots. Hobbies- photography, music, health. Favorite place- Disneyland. The mistletoe is symbolic of unrealistic wishing. Something that a really want is a letter, just for me, from my brother in Finland.

Christmas is 5 days away folks so I guess we'll see how my list does.

great fun!

thanks friends who came to support me :)

cannot wait for the next race!!!

27 October 2010

i'm thankful for... running

sometimes i slack off and forget how much i love love love running. i promised my friend i would go running today and so i did, even though i was quite tired. it was glorious. a bit nippy, but i warmed up pretty quick.

how grateful i am for a healthy body that allows me to do things i love!

breakfast of champions

it's time for a little accountability

healthy food and exercise?

gross. please give me some moose tracks ice cream and a chick flick.

i decided that i need to be more healthy, but sometimes it's not fun. or is it? can healthy food be yummy? is exercising fun?

running is my exercise of choice. the hardest part is getting out the door. this week i went running with my roommate Amanda. EPIC. i really loved it! i forget how much i love running! i'm looking forward to future awesome runs with A Garlock. (i also pushed myself really hard in weight lifting and am sore, but stronger and more attractive.)

i am an ice cream addict. my roommate even cut out all the Sammy's coupons for me because she knows how much i love it. i think i need to go to ICAA (ice cream addicts anonymous). recently i discovered an amazing food that satisfies my ice cream craving while keeping me healthy- yogurt.
and last night i rode a razor scooter to my new favorite place- earthfruits yogurt. i could eat there every day! their yogurt is all fruit (even the chocolate) and they have tons of really healthy toppings- fruit, nuts, granola, kashi. ahhhh it's heaven. if one day i randomly disappear, you can probably find me at the corner of university and bulldog, eating some earthfruits yogurt.

i am a firm believer that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. (my family laughs because i never ate breakfast in high school.) breakfast needs to be balanced- fiber, dairy, and sugar- to give you energy throughout the day. cold cereal is good- but it's gotta be the good stuff (none of that sugary, cavity yielding junk- although i secretly love it). this fall, however, i'm digging parfait. yes- vanilla yogurt, your fruit of choice (whatever is in season or some frozen stuff!), and grape nuts (or granola). delightful! you feel energy throughout the morning, and you don't feel like you just ate a piece of chocolate cake for breakfast. waaaay better than those nasty weight loss drinks, because this is real food.

a strawberry parfait is my breakfast of the champions. what is yours?

did i mention? only 14 days! (i.e. 2 weeks)

22 August 2010

. . winding down. .

the month of august has been quite a boring month. but let me catch up on some of the more exciting things i have done.
1. Tie Dye!
Mike is pro at this. he has taught be everything i know. so a bunch of us got together and made tie dye shirts. we also made crepes. i made the crepes. mike provided fruit and delicious butter syrup. yum. a thunder storm made the night exponentially more epic. loved it.
2. Britt got married.
My lib square roommate, Brittany, got married on the 14th. after getting lost about 5.3 mil
lion times, i found her reception up at Granite Park in Sandy. she was beautiful and oh so happy. the reception was darling and totally her style. it was terrific to see my old roommates and peeps from the square! it also didn't hurt that she had some delicious grub for us to eat.

3. I ran a 10K- while sick.
Wednesday morning I woke up, my head about exploding from a headache, nose stuffed up, and a throat that felt like it had been sawed in half. after seven hours at work that day i came home feeling even worse. thursday and friday i was basically dead to the world. i wasn't sure if i should run the 10K... but, not wanting to waste the $20 i'd spent on registration, and wanting to run again so badly- i did it! my time was not great. i could have gone a TON faster had i been 100% well. but at least i finished. (my brother also got 2nd in his age division!)
i move out tuesday! new adventures soon to begin!

08 August 2010

{hard core}

time: 4:00 am ... way to early for anyone to be awake. my alarm clock pulls me out of the hour of sleep that finally came. resisting the urge to turn it off and go back into semi-peaceful sleep, i get up and get dressed- to race.

4:46 am... arrive at Riverwoods and hop on a bus to take me to the top. freakishly nervous. luckily i sit by a nice girl who is also experiencing the butterflies associated with a first half marathon.

5:15 am.... finally arrive at south fork. go to portapotties. then walk around laughing at the deer wandering among thousands of people like its one of us.
6:15 am jog a bit. down to where we heard the start is supposed to be- after a mile of seeing nothing but vegetation, we turn around. mass confusion ensues.

7:00 am. . . race officials arrive and inform us that it is our fault that the race has not started. we wait impatiently for the race to start!

approx. 7:15 am. . . i'm off!
miles 1-4 i contentedly keep a steady pace whilst listening to empowering tunes such as "remember the name," Glee, and Anberlin. after mile 4 some nice children give me water. thanks. (note to self- when running early in the morning, bring tissues because it is no fun running with a runny nose.)
mile 5 my ipod decides to suck all the power and die! i am left with no music. after considering just giving up then, i press on. after all, the morning is young and nature is beautiful. i feel great.
miles 6-9 getting a bit hotter. running a switchback uphill was not on the course map- i swear. but i do pretty good. a nice man runs by giving high fives and telling us how great we are doing. i see the pregnant lady i met at the start line and feel very inspired/empowered.mile 9 this is as far as i have ever run. the rest will pretty much be mental....
miles 9.2-12 phew this is getting hot. i'm sweating like a mother. some powerade invigorates me, as well as the cute little boys giving high fives. i am still keeping a steady pace despite the hot morning sun beating on me. sometimes i get the weird sensation of tingling in my calves. my legs feel a bit numb. i bust out of the canyon and know that i am almost done.
mile 12 right after the mile mark i see water ahead and my friend mike- cheering me on and taking pictures. he runs alongside me asking me how i'm doing (i'm a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being the best and 1 being the worst.) and tells me to keep pushing- i'm almost done. determining to run the rest of the way i keep it up. as i near the finish line i hear people cheering me on. i don't know them, but they are rooting for me. my friend Bre yells my name, telling me i'm awesome.
mile 13 i put on a last burst of speed and spring across the finish line!
thoughts afterward: i can't believe i just ran that! i feel great! give me some water please. i have never sweated so hard or pushed so hard. this is the best high. when can i do the next half?

i ran the Provo Half Marathon, August 7, 2010.

i am hard core.

thanks to everyone who supported me through my training and race: my family, my roommates (Jessica, Shalise, and Collette), Mike, Breanne, Katie, and Grandpa and Grandma Thomas!

is it weird that i cannot wait until the Halloween Half marathon?
Bring it on!

15 April 2010

lose yourself in the music the moment

ok here is a little update on my training for the UV half marathon in June. (this is for the few loyal readers that i do have. ha)

i've been running everyday this week. yay me! today i ran 5 1/2 miles- the farthest i've ever run. its not very far if you are seasoned runner, but it was long for me. here is the problem(s)

1. a closed cart full of dishes and such fell on my right leg (yes and the knee with tendonitis) a few weeks ago. yesterday as i was running it was killer. i just wanted to cut my leg off. i was super frustrated. like kicking things mad. but i completed a 4 mile run.

don't go away. it gets worse

2. today when i was running my knee didn't hurt at all. i was excited. i was doing good with not stopping and had a pretty good pace. and then all of a sudden my heart begins to feel like its made of lead. i felt like every breath i took was a burden and i couldn't get enough air. even when i slowed down. i had to walk a lot. i ran farther, but i don't think it really counts since i had to stop a lot. even when i stopped my heart was about to burst from my chest. the pain was horrible. it made me nauseous and it was all i could do not to fall over. no bueno.

so i feel like an idiot. i want so badly to run the half marathon. even more than that i want to be in shape. i feel really down on myself lately. running helps. but if i can't breath and pump blood, running isn't going to work.

i didn't have trouble breathing when i was on swim team. so why now?

i feel dumb because 1. my roommate runs with me and she kept having to stop and wait for me. 2. i can always work through pain. i can ignore pain. i have high pain tolerance. i guess your heart stopping qualifies as pretty high pain (i'm being dramatic i know). 3. my two best friends, neal and nate, are very in shape and i look up to them a lot. maybe i'm vain but when they back from their missions i want to look good.

my mom thinks i have pleurisy. i'm like great. lets just add a heart condition onto my already weak immune system. why not just put me in a bubble where nothing can touch me and i can't do anything?

i want to keep running, but i think tomorrow i'd better take it easy. as entertaining as it would be for cars driving by, i don't think it would be very fun to pass out or throw up on my next run.

grrrrrr.

29 November 2009

over the river and through the woods

i'm back from Thanksgiving Break! And can i just tell you it was fantastic?? Going home is positively wonderful. It's amazing how much more I appreciate and love my family since I "moved out" last fall! We hardly ever fight anymore... not that we fought before (he he). We just have so much fun together.

Home. What is it really? What does it mean? I say I'm "going home" to my Provo apartment and it is a terr
ific place that I love being. But it's true when they say "there's no place like home". My home is the place I can go and be myself all the time. I don't have to worry about what people are thinking. I love that at home we can finish each other's sentences. We have the same inside jokes that we've had for years. I love every member of my family. I love that we are all unique, yet we fit together. Like the pieces of a puzzle, in which no piece is the same, we are all different and play different roles. But together we mesh and form a beautiful picture.

Thanksgiving Day 2009 began with a race. A 5K to be exact. My Grandpa Thomas, mom, me, and my brother Hyrum ran the Cottonwood Heights Thanksgiving 5K. It was my very first race and it was just fantastic! I wasn't sure if I would like racing all the much... but let me tell you, the adrenaline rush you get when you can see the finish line, well, its just amazing! I was so pumped after the race that I'm pretty sure I could have run another race! My next goal: Half Marathon baby.

The food at Thanksgiving is amazing. Here is what my family ate (in great amounts): turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy (if you are me you put gravy on the stuffing and the turkey as well), yams from heaven, rolls, olives, apple and banana salad. My family loves pie. We made many different kinds this year: pumpkin, chocolate- butterscotch, chocolate, cherry, lemon- sour cream, and apple- cranberry. Yum!
Of course Saturday's highlight was that BYU killed U of U in the "Holy War"! Go BYU!

iRun

"My PRs will never garner attention or generate awards. But when I run, I am 100 percent me- my strengths and weaknesses play out like a cracked-open diary, my emotions often as raw as the chafing from my jog bra. In my ultimate moments of vulnerability, I am twice the woman I was when I thought I was meant to look pretty on the sidelines. Sweaty and smiling, breathless and beautiful: Running helps us all shine. A lesson worth passing along."
