"books are a uniquely portable magic"

it's weird not to be in school. let me tell you. for the past 18 years of my life, minus the 18 months on a mission, i've been in school! and learning new things every day. now suddenly, i'm a university graduate, with a job and it's weird not to go learn something new every day. don't get me wrong, i love my job, but i also miss learning. so i wanted to make a goal for 2015 that would help me to continue to learn, and since i love reading, i've set a goal to read one new book (at least) each month. i've only read one of these books all the way through before and so i am hoping to expand my knowledge and rediscover reading. you'll notice that these aren't really leisure books, or "easy" reading. i want to keep myself accountable so i'm going to list the books below and then I'll report on each one (kind of like school haha).

February-- The Anatomy of Peace (The Arbinger Institute)
March-- Intuitive Eating (Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch)
April-- The Infinite Atonement (Tad R. Callister)
May-- The Four Agreements (Don Miguel Ruiz)
June-- My Story (Elizabeth Smart)
July-- Yes Please (Amy Poehler)
August-- Brave New World (Aldous Huxley)
September-- Left Neglected (Lisa Genova)
October-- The Miracle of Forgiveness (Spencer W. Kimball)
November-- Critical Care (Theresa Brown)
December-- A Chrismas Carol (Charles Dickens)

i'm a little bit excited and a little nervous to read all these! but i hope that i can learn a lot and maybe inspire a few of you to read too!

march: goals

it's time to report on my goals for february and make goals for march. i can't believe it's finally starting to warm up! i'm super excited!
sign up for a half marathon: not completed. i've decided to do a FULL marathon and i'll be signing up this month!
go to aerobics classes 2x a week: i feel like i did pretty good at this.
save $100: check.
celebrate birthday month: birthday month was a wild success! boom!
read from The Infinite Atonement/ The Holy Temple each Sunday: i think there was one Sunday where i didn't read out of one of the books, but i did do pretty good.
go to temple three times: done.
go to ward activites: i even got work off so that i could go to the activity that my council planned! i've definitely been more social in my ward this last month.
serve someone daily: i didn't keep record of this, but i did pray for opportunities to serve. mostly i served my roommates (doing their dishes etc.) but i could have had a better attitude about it.

i've got some pretty great goals for march. i also have a lot of fun plans for this month! i just hope it keeps being warm and everything. i am ready for spring!

do you have any goals for March?

03 February 2013

goals: february 2013

remember how back in the summer i used to post monthly goals? well i've decided to start it up again. i make goals for the semester, but it's kind of weird now that i'm only taking two classes and then i'll be done with school for a while! making monthly goals makes much more sense. so here goes.

february is a great month because it's my birthday! however, that often gets over shadowed and ruined by valentine's day. i mean, really? my birth is more important than your love. sorry i'm not sorry. also, have you noticed how every year a sappy movie tends to come out on valentine's day? last year it was The Vow. this year it's Safe Haven (i think). i'd rather re-watch Harry Potter. (actually i'd rather stick a fork in my eyeball.) speaking of birthdays (yes we're still on that subject) i have to work on my birthday! and the day after! and the day after that! and get this, my birthday is the saturday of president's day weekend. no going out of town for me. i have literally begged for my coworkers to take my shift on my birthday (even bribing with ice cream or hot chocolate) and no one has taken it! who wants to work until 11 pm on their birthday? not me. not any normal birthday-loving person. so there you have it, i probably will be working on my birthday. at least i get paid good money for it. and get free food. woot.
i'm only a little bitter.
however, birthday month is going to be great!!!! any ideas of what i should do to celebrate the most celestial month of the year? birthday gifts will be accepted.
thank you.
and good-bye.

to read

this year one of my resolutions is to read more. now that i'm graduating college and will be working full-time, i will have much more free time. i realized that when you just work, you can come home and do whatever you want. you can read. you can bake. you can go workout. it's wonderful not having homework! i do have two classes this semester which will require some time, but after April will be free of school for a little while.
and since i love to read and i'm tired of only reading textbooks, i've resolved to read more. i'm currently in the middle of the Harry Potter series, but i want to branch out. so here's what i'm gonna do.
2 classics
2 self-help (already chosen: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People)
and
2 inspirational/religious

so far i've only chosen to read 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey. I had a goal to read it before i turn 23 so we will see if i can accomplish that! however, i need help choosing the other 5 books to read.
this is where you come in.
i need your recommendations on which books i should read! so please, leave a comment below on a classic/self-help/inspirational book that you love and that you think i should read!

2013

change is in the air. yes, something tells me that 2013 is bringing in change for me. perhaps it's the extra nip in the air. or that fact that i worked about 100 hours over the break. or maybe it's just that i have finally realized that things never really go as you plan them to.

i'm graduating from university in April. finally.
and then what? i honestly don't know.
i could be doing anything really.

but it's not just that. i sense change. i can feel it. i know that i am going to be constantly working on changing myself to be a better person.  but i also feel that there will be some changes that Heavenly Father is going to throw into my path that will require me to make tough decisions, follow the Spirit, and trust in Him more fully. i'm going to have to be very patient. i thought i learned how to be patient in 2012, but i'm positive that i'll be learning even more about patience in 2013.

i'm a little scared for all this change. i'm scared of losing. i'm scared of the unknown. i'm scared of choosing wrong. i'm scared of getting hurt. but my faith is bigger than my fear! i will not let fear cripple me, or stop me from doing things that will make me happier.

because, i believe that the best is yet to be! "God doesn’t care nearly as much about where you have been as He does about where you are and, with His help, where you are willing to go" (Jeffrey R. Holland).  I vow to learn from the past, but not live in it. expect and embrace change. be patient and be find joy in every part of the journey. choose happiness. and set the world on fire with love.

28 October 2012

beka did what?!

on saturday in a craze- induced by homemade oreos and too much sleep- i signed up for a half marathon . . . that's on THANKSGIVING.

i know that i give the illusion that i'm this buff, hardcore, legit runner. but secretly i've been really bad at working out slash running this semester. so this half marathon may or may not be the death of me. despite my trepidation and underpreparedness i am excited! i'm going to be running it with two africa besties- Abby and Kaylen! they are both way more legit than i am but it's ok. i just run for the fun of it! you can bet that these next three weeks i'll be spending much more time running and working out. i'm excited to work towards this goal! it's going to be a great way to keep my motivation up as the weather gets colder. i hope that it goes through to the Christmas season too.

in other news: my friend Sam came down for the weekend. Sam has been living in NYC for the past year and a half. now if that's not living the dream, i don't know what is! anyways she is going on a mission in 17 days and so it was only mandatory that she come down and see me before she left. it was a blast! we got soup at Zupas, watched John Tucker Must Die, and went to a Spudnut party with some old friends. **spudnut: a delicious homemade doughnut made with potatoes.
typical of our relationship

ps. any good tips on styling my short hair? i'm at a loss people.

06 August 2012

august

i know you probably all think i've fallen off the face of the earth, and maybe i have. but i promise i'm going to make a come back this month! i even had a friend challenge me to write more. so i'm going to. promise.
it's time for a recap of my goals for july. ready? ok!

spiritual
*go to temple 2x- done and done! i even drove out to Mt. Timp when the Provo Temple was closed.
*more meaningful prayers- this isn't exactly a quantifiable goal, but i feel like i increased the sincerity of my prayers.
* roommate prayers- we are usually good for the first part of the week but the weekends we are really bad at having them.

physical
*workout 5x a week for at least 30 min.- i actually did decent at this. i got some good new workouts that i like too!
*run 3x a week- fail. boo.
* no chips and salsa- i totally did this! and i didn't even miss them after a while.

financial/educational
*finish 7 habits book- i know i've been working on this for two months and it's still not finished!
*save half of each paycheck- what with my laptop up and breaking, i didn't get to save anything. but now that i have two jobs i hope i can save some money and not go into debt when i start school.
* spend only $50 on food- again the budget was totally thrown off when my laptop broke. i didn't spend much money though.

social
*do 1 thing from Bucket List each week- i did this! it was great!
* go to everything i'm invited to- i did this too! which is why i didn't blog much because i was partying a lot :)

it's august- the last month of summer! i can't believe it's almost over, but truth be told, i'm excited for school to start. this summer has been long, uneventful, and somehow boring. don't get me wrong, it's been a generally good, fun ride, but some days i have just wished to be somewhere else- even the library studying my brains out. here are my goals for the month! what are your goals for the last month of summer?

01 July 2012

july

what the. . . ?! it's july! summer is flying by! i am frightened and excited by it. i realized that i love learning and i am ready to be back in school. i know i will be saying the same thing come october, but right now i am really excited to be back in school. however, i want to make the most of the rest of my summer and live it up! i also want to take this time to improve myself and become the best me that i can be! here is a quick recap of my june goals and how i did.

Spiritual
Go to the temple at least 1x: i went exactly once, but i am glad i got to go at all! what with being insanely busy with CNA classes and then having a bit of a hard time with dating, i needed to get the peace that the temple brings.
Make morning prayers a habit: this will be a continuing goal, but i found as i studied scriptures in the morning i remembered better to say prayers. i want to make my prayers more natural and more personal though still.
Finish the May Ensign: i am proud to say i finished it on Saturday the 30th! I have loved reading the Conference addresses and i am so grateful for the words of our Apostles and Prophets.

Physical
Start marathon training: fail. but i did run a little more in the last two weeks of the month and feeling better about things.
Workout at least 30 min/day: i did really good at this! even when i was in CNA class and working i made sure i worked out every night. i think i've found some good circuits. i just need heavier weights now.
No ice cream: guysss, i love ice cream so this was hard, but i did it! there was only once that i had ice cream because my friend chantelle bought me an ice cream cone and you can't say no to gifts right?

Educational/Financial
Pass State CNA test: well i haven't taken it quite yet, but i am going to take it asap. as you may know i did get a CNA job so i am super excited for that!
Find a CNA job: check (see above).
Save at least $300: apparently i fail at saving money.... boo. i didn't save anything! ok well i did get a paycheck yesterday and i hope to save $100 from it.

Social
Go to all church events possible: i think i did this. i mean i couldn't go to very many. . . but i tried. i even started going to ward choir!
Do my visiting teaching: i am proud to say that i did this within the first two weeks of the month. booyah!

july is going to be an interesting month- getting a new job and everything. i'm not sure how it is going to fit in with everything else in my life. but i know that i can juggle everything to make room for the most important stuff. here are my goals for this month!

22 June 2012

joy as exceeding as is your pain

yesterday i felt like i was doing good and then i got upset again and wrote a really long (unpublished) post in defense of myself. then i went home and went to institute. fully planning on still harboring some resentment and probably publishing that post later that evening.

it didn't happen.
and thank goodness for that.

at institute Pres. and Sister Samuelin talked about how the Atonement applies in Eternal Marriage and how we have to overcome the Natural Man to reach our fill potential in Eternal Marriage. one thing that stuck out to me was that eventually, no matter what hardships we are going through, we will have joy as exceeding as was our pain. despite sin, mistakes, guilt and trials, the Atonement makes it all right and we are given joy! another thing that i learned is that selfishness is the root of so many of my problems. selfishness takes, takes, takes and never gives. when we are selfish it is easier to commit sin because sins are ultimately all self serving! as a girl trying to overcome the "Natural Man" i do pretty good with the reading of scriptures, going to church, praying, etc. but i am selfish. perhaps this is because as a university student almost everything we do is for ourselves, or maybe it's just because it's easier to be selfish. but right then and there i decided to work on being more selfless.

doesn't that lesson sound just amazing? don't stop reading though- it gets better.

i went up afterwards to talk to Pres. Samuelin. i love the Samuelins! i literally want to be them someday. as i talked to Pres. Samuelin, he looked into my eyes, and spoke things that i needed to hear. i didn't have to tell him everything that i am struggling with right now, i didn't have to say anything. he just spoke. words of comfort. words of wisdom. and i knew, i know, that he is a man inspired of God. i know that God knew that last night i, Rebekah Arnesen, needed to hear some things and i needed to know i that i was loved for individually, that God knows me, and that He has a plan for me.

i walked out, near tears, and speechless. something sacred happened back there. a feeling i cannot forget. and it was like a filter was taken off my eyes and i saw things in a better light- more happy.

later that evening as i drove down the canyon, singing songs and feeling the summer air on my skin, i remembered that this is what life is all about. finding happiness. being happy.

trials, problems and heartaches don't necessarily go away. but anger, frustration, impatience, and selfishness, those are things we can control and eliminate. i am so grateful for that reminder.

here is to the rest of the summer. being happy. having adventures. and perfecting myself.
this is me and my Grandma Arnesen on my blessing day!

05 June 2012

june

it's june! summer can officially start. didn't you think that may went by waaaay to fast? i only get to live with allison for two more weeks and i'm really sad about that. i have zero idea what i will be doing come July. heck, i might even peace out and move away for a month and a half. probably not. i'm going crazy these next two weeks taking my CNA class so posts might be sporadic. however, i need to make some goals for the month of june. so here i am, reporting on last month's goals and making some new ones.

Spiritual
-finish the Book of Mormon: i finished it at 11:30 pm on May 31. although i cut it close there at the end, i am really glad that i finished. sometimes having a time to have it finished helps me read more consistently.
- go to the temple at least twice: i think i did just that and it was great! i love the temple.

Physical
-no eating at Cafe Rio/Costa Vida: for the first few days of may i sorely missed it, but i got used to it after a while. i ate at Rio once- but it was on a date so i think it's totally ok!
- go running at least 15 times: i didn't quite make it that much, what with my knee being jacked up. but i ran more than i did in april, and i had some real good runs. i also started working out every morning and every night and it's been real great!

Educational/Financial
- save $600 ($300 each paycheck): this did not happen. i think i saved $300 dollars. having to pay for gas and other stuff still adds up. i think i spent my entire second paycheck on tithing, rent, and gas. lamo.
- finish The Seven Habits: sorry i got involved in other books and have not touched the 7 Habits.
- walk to work, not drive: i did good at this, especially since it's been so nice. i am going to walk a lot more once the CNA class is over (because i'm spending so much moola on gas).

Social
- get to know new ward: i've made some friends, but i still need to work on being more social and actually hanging out with people. maybe flirtations can occur?
- have a happy attitude at work: ummm i think i do this. except yesterday (but that was june so doesn't count).

summertime update

i'm a month into summer. in your face high school students! jajajajajaja. (laughing is just so much more fun in spanish.) remember how i made a summer bucket list? you're probably not wondering how i'm doing on getting everything done on the list.

things i've completed:
Hike the Y
See Avengers
City Creek Center
Sammy's 2-for-1 Tuesday Shakes

new items:
fly a kite
learn to longboard
ride a motorcycle (don't tell my mom)

yeah apparently i have a great summer ahead. now if i could just find some friends. mine seem to have all gone awol- to dating, marriage, missions, internships, summer sales, and (honestly) i don't know what else. what a dragggg. don't they know summer in provo is awesome??? *sarcastic*

please take me here
other questions on my mind:
- how is it that i'm not scared of the spider in the cage on my desk, but when i spider crawls towards my computer i instantly want to throw up?
- where should i apply for nursing school? and, where should i go???
- should i live in Provo for the summer term?
- should i walk in August?
- should i wait another semester to graduate and take pathophysiology?

so many questions. you let me know if you find the answers to them. or if you find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. until then, happy weekend. i hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day!

16 May 2012

word-ful wednesday

yesterday i had nothing to say. my mind was. . . well, empty. today it seems like everything is my mind is spilling over and my brain might explode. so, please bear with me as i proceed on a very jumbled and random post. and don't judge that the writing isn't eloquent. i'm too tired to think eloquently.
*most of this really is addressed to me and my own short comings*

i realized today that i let myself be friend zoned a lot. in fact, i think all girls are friend zoned a lot. mostly because guys and girls are too afraid to say what they want and how they feel. we are afraid of being honest. we are afraid of ruining a friendship by asking that friend on a date or telling them how we feel about them. it is "easier" just to stay in the friend zone, than to risk being hurt if they don't like you back or it doesn't work out. but honestly is it worth it?
i got a wedding invitation today from a guy who i was in love with freshman year. we did everything together and i considered him my best friend. i always hoped something would happen when he got home from his mission, but i always expected him to be the one who would suddenly "see the light" and fall madly in love with me. i was too scared to tell him how i felt- until it was too late. when i finally told him, he was already dating another girl (his fiance now) and i knew in my heart that i was far too late. so now i have a wedding announcement in my garbage because i just can't stand to look at it.
this, and other smaller events, gave birth to my brain explosion today.
as girls i think we expect (due to stories we read, hear and watch every day) that some day this guy is going to look over and realize we are what he has always wanted and suddenly a fairy tale will ensue and everything will be perfect. another dating lie is that if the impossible happened for someone else, then it can happen to you. not true. we are the rule not the exception!  however, i submit that it is not that easy! girls, we have to put forth some effort. because, for the most part, guys are pretty dim. sometimes we have to let them know what we want. and then, we have to be willing to walk away (even from a great friendship), if he doesn't want the same things. yes, we have to walk away- completely. because, after God,  you want to be number one in a man's life. not his number five, number twenty-seven, or number one hundred sixty-three. it's hard to walk away, but it can be done.

really, this just comes down to honesty. walking away requires telling him (or her) how you feel and then being able to accept what they feel and chose to do. oh, what's that you say? it's scary to tell people how you honestly feel about them? yes it is. i know. i tend to be more the passive aggressive type. hinting, hinting, hinting- and hoping someday they get the message. however, talking with friends and also having friends who are not passive aggressive, has helped me realize that in all things just say what you feel. don't be afraid of offending someone or losing friends. if you feel strongly about something, find a kind and tactful way to tell them. i've lost many a relationship because i didn't communicate clearly what i was thinking. i expected them to pick up on my hints and come to me apologizing. but that's not really how it works. no one can read minds (or in my case, heavily encrypted hints).  the faster we learn to talk about and express our feelings, in a constructive way, the better off we are.
but don't be mean or petty. don't place blame. don't just look at faults. remember that you care about this person. remember that you are also a part of the relationship and therefore responsibility for where you are is partly on you. remember that if you don't have something nice to say then you probably shouldn't say anything at all.

wow look at me being all philosophical and therapeutic. guess i should start practicing what i preach right?
i need to break out of my passive-aggressive shell and tell him what i am feeling. be willing to accept the consequences. and walk away. because i don't want another experience like i had today. i don't want another "what if?".
because, when a guy becomes your "list," your "standard" then you probably ought to let him know. if it doesn't work out, i can move on. but at least i won't be hanging on to the hope that maybe one day i will be his number one. i can't keep getting upset because he takes two days to text me back (a five word answer- gee thanks!). even if we are "good friends" i know that will never be enough, unless i find someone better for me. but i will always wonder. . .
ah! this is a freaking scary post. i'm scared to post this because it's so honest and so personal. but this is my blog and i can write whatever i want. if you don't like it, then don't read it. i do believe everything i wrote, but it's hard to put those belief's into actions. it's scary. i've always said that i value my friendship with a guy more than i want to date him- one of the big reasons i don't even try to date any of my friends, because i don't want to ruin a friendship. but in the end friends are not the most important thing, are they? it's the man who is across from you at the temple, making vows that will seal you together forever. it's the man who will help you raise your children and do the dishes for you when you are just too tired. it's the man who will be your best friend and your lover. it's the man who will serve God and help you to serve Him too. that's the thing that matters most. that's who you will be with forever.
so yeah, it's freaking scary to tell people how you feel. but if they don't want you, for all you are and have to offer life, then it's not worth it. it's better to die with a clean stab to the heart, than to be stabbed over and over with pins until you bleed out. (i apologize for my gory metaphor. . . ) and, it's only by doing the thing we fear, that we over come out fears. then we are not afraid anymore.

so here's what i'm gonna do:
- speak what i feel. all the time. be honest.
- be more open in my dating relationships. right from the beginning.
- if someone hurts or offends me, let them know in a timely, kind, tactful manner.
- be myself 100%. don't be ashamed of my odd quirks!
- be totally honest on this blog. write what i want.

on another note, there are fish in the flaming sea! do not let a break up or a wish stop you from finding another guy who might be better than you could ever imagine! i believe that you marry your best friend, but it might be that you become best friends through dating and courtship. and don't worry. no matter if you are 16 or 26, the guy will come along. someday when  the time is right. he will be there. and you will be his one.

dr. oz's challenge

have you heard of Dr. Oz? he has a tv show (which i have never seen) about health and stuff. it's been a while since i posted anything about health (my bad) and since summer is here and school is out i have lots of time on my hands! my friend Adam remarked the other day that if he was in Provo he would be working out a lot! so that is going to be one of my goals. i also want to start eating healthier than i have for the last little while. i've had this pinned on Pinterest for a little while. it's from Dr. Oz and i really like it! everything on here is something we've heard before and should really be no brainers. but sometimes eating healthy is a lot harder than working out.
Dr. Oz's Challenge
1. Cut out soda- i don't really drink soda, but sometimes i just like a good dr. pepper. soda has tons of sugar and is so fattening! plus, caffeine isn't good for you either.
2. Stop eating at least 3 hours before bed- this is one of my big problem areas. i like a good midnight snack. i'm going to set the time (since i don't have a set bed time) to stop eating each at 9 pm. at 9, the fridge and pantry is locked up tight. (of course there will be exceptions like if it is a party, ward function, date, etc.)
3. Move for 10 minutes each day
4. Exercise portion control
       - no snacks larger than your fist
5. Weigh yourself everyday
6. Take a vitamin every day (one that includes a vitamin B complex) and calcium daily
7. Reinvent recipes
8. Conquer your cravings

Pretty simple right? i hope so! i'll be focusing on the two highlighted items this week and i will report back next week. then i will go on to one or two more. i'm excited to do this and to work out more! i want to work out at least an hour each day and really start training for my marathon (if my knee will permit). yay for being healthy!
i just love this. this will be me

01 May 2012

may

you may remember that i was posting my monthly goals on this here blog. i skipped april. pretty much my goal for april was to survive finals. now that i have successfully lived through dreaded finals (+ a break up) i am back to my goal making. first, a recap on march's goals.

Spiritual
make a mormon.org profile- done! i may have done it on the last sunday of the month, but at least i did it. you can check it out here
finish book on personal revelation- yyyyeah i read like 2 chapters. i will try to finish it soon.
Physical
21 day no junk food challenge- again that was a fail. i think i did good for like the first 3 days of the month. and it was all downhill from there.
start training for a marathon- i did run more often, but no official training started (it has yet to start....)
get enough sleep- in retrospect, this goal is very ambiguous and does not fit the SMART goal-making technique at all. i guess i got "enough" sleep. i mean, i didn't die or kill someone because i was sleep-deprived.
School
spend more time in library- honestly i can't remember how i did, but i am almost positive i did a good job at this. especially as the end of the month approached and finals came closer, me and the HBLL became verrrrry close.
do well on EXSC 400 and physics tests- i am proud to say that i did really great on both of these exams! i got the best score i had received on any test in functional anatomy. and i also did well on the physics test. booyah!
apply for Make A Wish Internship- let's be real, i was so excited that i applied within the first week of march.
Self
start paying Hyrum back- i paid back $100. only $185 to go.
more faces, less Facebook- um don't remember. don't really care.
write one thing in grateful journal daily- i was good at this for the first couple weeks, but as things got busier and i started dating someone, i definitely stopped.

so here are my goal for May! the summertime can either be a wonderful time to accomplish a lot of goals you don't have time to do during the school year, or it can be a major slack off time. i plan on being productive this summer.

do you have goals for May? what are they?

24 April 2012

summer nights

i love summer! well, i usually love summer. this year i feel weird because i feel like i should be flying out to uganda (like i was last summer) and since i'm not, i am missing that wonderful place even more. i also feel like a lot of my best friends are either leaving for the summer, or are busy with their own lives/families. i like making new friends, but i don't make new best friends very quickly or easily. after finding out i didn't get the internship in AZ i was super bummed about summer and not looking forward to anything. thanks to my amazing roommate Allison and my own propensity to make lists, i have made a summer bucket list. i sure hope i will do more than what is on this list, but even with these things done, it will be an awesome summer!

HP marathon
Hogle Zoo
Hike the Y
Harry Potter's Birthday Party (7.31)
Spiderman, Avengers, Batman
Disco Skating
Boating
Read at least one book per month
Taco Tuesday
make a rainbow cake
Chaco tan line
homemade popsicles
go on a picnic
Madagascar 3
Temple Square
City Creek Center

GC weekend rewind

what a blessed weekend! i love general conference! i feel so freaking blessed after the wonderful weekend i had. the past for GC's i've had very specific questions that needed to be answered. this conference i didn't have any huge questions. but i did come with an open heart to hear whatever i needed to hear to make me a better disciple of Christ. here's a few things i learned.

-intently prepare to receive temple ordinances
- pray to know what sacrifices i need to make to reach my destiny
- make specific personal commitments each week
- stop holding grudges, being envious and gossiping
- let go of grievances. don't let grudges or unforgiveness hold me down
- be more grateful
- take time to meditate daily on eternal truths and what really matters
- share my love and testimony of The Book of Mormon
- live my life so that it reflects my love and devotion to the Savior

what did you learn from General Conference?

other highlights of the busy weekend:
- spending time with special people
- beautiful spring weather (minus sunday)
- blossoms!
- diy frisbee golf on campus
- making a wish in the pool in the JFSB
- swedish twister
- kneaders for breakfast
- my first el salvadorian food: puposa
- Passover celebration with my family
- staying up insanely late because sometimes it's better than going to sleep
- getting an 89% on my Functional anatomy test
- best. letter. ever. in the mail

happy

last week was the happiness experiment and it went so well that i have to tell ya'll about it. i learned so much! there were some terribly sad things that happened last week which affected me and my family. there were also good moments. mostly moments of small triumph. moments that, as small as they may seem, brought a smile to the face and light to the heart.
i think i redefined happiness. not just in my mind- because in my mind i knew what happiness was- but in my heart. happiness was in my heart and therefore in my soul. and so i [hope] happiness exuded from me. i'm not perfect. but i'm on my way. i will keep working towards "happy." it is my daily goal from here to eternity.

happiness. . .

is a CHOICE. it's something we actively choose to be. there are many things that we can be sad or angry about. but there are so many more things which we can be happy about.

is not fleeting or in the moment. it is not always loud or boisterous. sometimes it is the quiet peace that comes from God. but real happiness- it lasts.

is expressed in many different ways. a smile. a happy tune on my ipod. spending time with a friend. a jaunty walk. colorful outfits. eating dessert for dinner [and not worrying about the calories.]  giggles and laughter. service.

is not an absence of worry, but rather it is the life filled with faith. and that faith allows us to nourish hope and trust in God. this brings happiness.

does not worry about the future. happiness allows us to wonder about the future, but does not rely on "good things" to make the future happy.

allows us to continue on when things seem hard. because we know better days are ahead. it is hope.

comes through obedience, prayer, scripture study, attention to the promptings of the spirit, service, and following everything that God would have us do to return to His presence.

a conglomeration of happy

“Generally speaking, the most miserable people I know are those who are obsessed with themselves; the happiest people I know are those who lose themselves in the service of others...By and large, I have come to see that if we complain about life, it is because we are thinking only of ourselves.”   President Gordon B. Hinckley

i'm working on being more happy, optimistic, and smiling more. these are my inspiration.

what makes you happy?

march

Wow can you believe march is here already? Spring is just around the corner! Here is my review of my February goals.
Spiritual
Read Daughters in My Kingdom daily- i did pretty good at this. i don't have a record of this and i'm not finished with the book yet, but i really have enjoyed reading a couple pages each morning at breakfast.
Go to Temple once- it's hard for me to get to the temple because i don't have a car and i don't like walking there. i was so grateful when Abby texted me and asked me if i wanted to go. i love the temple!
Physical
Workout 4x a week- again, i don't have a record for this. i know i worked out at least three times a week though and most weeks i think i got 4 days in!
Fab Ab February- i'm not going to lie, i did not really do this. i am not sure how i feel about the "fab ab" thing. i prefer doing Ab Ripper X two or three times a week rather than the same three exercises every day.
Self
Write in Journal once a week- i know i was really good at this at the beginning of the month, but i definitely slacked off towards the end.
Cook more meals- i did so, so. there was a week there when i had like no food so i lived off of bread and rice. but i did make some yummy meals too!
More faces, less Facebook- i definitely took time to spend time with people, especially people i haven't seen in a while! i was better at the beginning of the month though and got a little antisocial the last week.
School
Do well in Midterms- i don't wanna talk about it. i did not do so great on most of my midterms. but honestly, i did prepare the best could. i did, however, put most of the studying to the last minute and didn't prepare much ahead of time.
Scholarship/FAFSA application- done and done!

Here and my goals for March! I'm really excited for March! I'm going to get a lot done and start working toward some goals that i have had for a while.

oh and i'm also doing the March photo-a-day challenge found on Pinterest (sorry Pinterest is down right now so I can't link to it). most people use Instagram for this, but since i don't have a smart phone i will be using my "dumb phone" camera! ha! i already missed yesterday's photo but i will try hard to do every other day.

What are your goals for March?
Are you as excited about Spring as I am?
What is your favorite part of Spring?

leap day

i have nothing to write about.
my goals for this week (that i wrote about in this post) are going well.
- i have yet to start the challenge (tomorrow!) but i'm getting all the junk food i can before. i went to Sammy's with erin last night for 2 for 1 tuesdays. i forgot how much i lurv Sammy's pie shakes. seriously. the best. and because that wasn't enough (and there was no where to sit in Sammy's) we went to the Malt Shoppe for fries. i felt like i got my junk food intake for the month! on a healthy note, i'm finding yummy, healthy meal (thanks pinterest) that i want to make during the challenge. i also am looking for healthy snack ideas. any favorites you have?
- no television has been watched. i did watch some Mormon Messages last night while eating dinner, but i don't really think that counts. i am a lot more productive and i hope i am understanding my schoolwork better because i'm not distracted by tv.
- i have successfully gone to bed by 11 every night. i feel so much more rested in the morning and getting up at 7 is not a chore.
- i have worked out every day this week. i only got in 20 minutes this morning and i know i won't have time the rest of the day, but a little is better than nothing right?

i love food. i love free stuff. i love today. because i get free lunch and free dinner. free lunch via the tucano's birthday club. free dinner via a blind date (which i am quite excited for).  i hope the free treat at institute tomorrow is something healthy that i can eat. if not, i might die. i hope my mom buys me a block on monterey jack cheese because i need some cheese in my life.

i painted my nails last night. not too springy, but not too wintery. i know if i paint my nails too springy i will expect the weather to be warm and then i will be disappointed. as you can see, it is far from warm here in provo. anywhooo, i love the color! erin, my nail polish supplier, i owe you my gratitude.

i'm starting to stress a teensy bit about getting a job/internship for summer. i really need to make bank this summer and i would love to do something i enjoy. the Bean is closing beginning in june-ish (for a big remodel) so i will be officially out of a job. any ideas?

i am out of sandwich bags. this is going to present a problem when i need to pack a lunch tomorrow. kind souls willing to take me to smiths???

wow i feel like i asked a lot of ya'll in this post. so help a sister out will ya?

ps. it's leap day. i'm leaping with joy that february is over. it wasn't my most exciting month...
